The 28th Annual Independence Day Classic 5K is just days away

June 28, 2010
This July 4th will mark the 28th annual ID5K race/walk and Kids K at Newhall Park. We will run the same fast and flat course, including the last 1 1/2 miles of the City of Santa Clarita's parade and the proceeds will once again benefit the Cross Country Programs of our 6 Santa Clarita Valley High Schools.

All participants receive a well stocked goody bag and can enjoy a Jamba Juice or Myoplex shake at the finish line and Kids K participants will all receive a finishing medal. 5K participants will receive a patriotic tech t-shirt (great for running in the summer months) and are eligible for great age group award medals that run 3-deep in 5 year age categories.

The Kids K will begin at 7:45 am with the 5K following at 8:00 am. Join us from 1-5 pm on Saturday, July 3rd for a pre-race goody bag pick up and pre-race Registration at Dicks Sporting Goods (Carl Boyer Drive, Santa Clarita).

Alternatively, you can pick up your goody bag and/or still register race day at Newhall Park from 6:30am to race start.

Prediction Run

April 3, 2010
"Do You Know How Fast You Run?"

Did you ever dream of beating Kevin McSweeney, Dale Heys, or Kristin Schranz in a race that involves running? How about crossing the finish line with a "better" time than Chris DiStefano or Phil Howard? On Saturday, April 3rd, you will have your chance to do just that. Join us at the Santa Clarita Runners Inaugural Prediction Run. The race will take place at Central Park and the course distance will be between three and five miles.

How it works: The course and distance are announced on race day morning. Each runner then predicts how fast they can finish the run. The person with the highest time starts first and the clock starts ticking down. When your predicted time shows up on the clock is when you start the race. The winner will be the person that guesses their finishing time to the closest second. Think it's too easy? The catch is - no watches are allowed.

Distance: No shorter than 3 miles and no longer than 5 miles.

Date: Saturday, April 3rd

Time: Course announced at 7:30 a.m., Run starts at 8 a.m.

Cost: Free! This is a Race Series Fun Run and we want everyone to participate.

So, do you really know how fast you run? Leave your Garmins at home and come find out just how well you know yourself and your pace. Refreshments will be served after the race. Also, a special first place prize will be awarded to the winner.

-Hosted by Frank & Kelley Schranz (with Chris Louie)

February Calendar Changes

February 9, 2010
We've got a few changes to our February Calendar. First, in order to fully celebrate our Awards Banquet this Saturday night (February 13th), we are moving our Sunday Morning Marathon training to Saturday Morning. So, our 22 miler will occur at 6:30 am from Granary Square on Satuday, the 13th. This should allow us to party without guilt (or regret. The course has been added to the locations section of our website.

Also, Sunday, February 21st will mark the return of the Train Run at 7:30 am at the Newhall Metro station. Originally, we had cancelled the Sunday Marathon training, as this was going to replace the course. However, since Rawlins is still nursing a calf injury and can't run inclines, he's offered to set water out for those that would prefer to attend our standard Sunday training. Below is a more detailed description of the Train Run, by Phil Howard.

The Train Run

We leave from Newhall Station, there is some parking in front of the station and lots more behind. The 260 train is scheduled to leave at 7:45 am to arrive at Sylmar at 7:58am, so we are asking for all runners to arrive no later than 7:30 am, to allow for the purchase of your one way ticket ($4.50) and just in case the train arrives early. We usually gather briefly at Sylmar to make sure everyone is prepared, take a couple of photos then set off as a group.

We have about 3 miles of surface streets to cover before we hit the trails at Olive View Hospital, I would think we could get water and bathrooms at Olive View if needed but I have never tried before. From there the trail climbs for the next 5 miles to the saddle before the summit of the Beast (mile 8). There are bathrooms here but no water. The descent from here follows the Beast down to the Park and Ride lot near the 14 Freeway (mile 12) then the run back upSan Fernando Rd (Newhall Ave) to the station, about mile 14.

For those who want more miles, from the saddle you can run up to Camp 9 and back, this adds about 7 miles but there is another water and bathroom stop at Camp 9 (mile 11.5). This would give a total of about 21 miles.

We are hoping to have a water stop or two and we are looking to group for a post run meal at a nearby restaurant...
